OEM vs. Aftermarket — Straight Answers

Plain-English guidance from a technician. We quote both, we tell you where each one makes sense, and we never push.

The two columns

OEM — genuine and OEM-supplier

Genuine parts arrive in the manufacturer's box. OEM-supplier parts are the same component from the company that built it for BMW or Mercedes-Benz, in that supplier's box. Same casting, same tolerances, different label.

When it is the right call

Coolant paths, electronics, sensors, timing, and any job where a second attempt costs more in labor than the part costs in parts.

What to avoid

Paying dealer list for it. That is a counter markup, not a quality difference.

Quality aftermarket

Built by another manufacturer for the same application. The good lines are the ones that already supply European platforms and publish real specs. The rest is a coin flip.

When it is the right call

Brakes, filters, wear items, hardware, and older cars where the genuine number is gone or priced past sense.

What to avoid

No-name electrical, cheap cooling parts, and anything with no brand on the casting. Those come back.

Where we'd use OEM

  • Cooling: water pumps, thermostats, expansion tanks, hoses.
  • Electronics and sensors: crank and cam sensors, MAF, ABS units, modules.
  • Timing components and anything behind a cover you only want to open once.
  • Seals and gaskets on the engine and transmission.
  • Anything the car has to relearn or code after the swap.

Where aftermarket is safe

  • Brake pads and rotors from known lines, on daily drivers.
  • Oil, air, and cabin filters.
  • Wear items: bushings, control arms, sway bar links, wipers.
  • Exhaust hangers, clamps, and hardware.
  • Older cars where the genuine part is discontinued or priced past sense.

Questions

What is the difference between genuine, OEM, and aftermarket?
Genuine comes in the manufacturer's box. OEM is the same part from the supplier who made it for the manufacturer, in that supplier's box. Aftermarket is made by another company to fit the same application. Quality varies most in that last group.
Do you push one over the other?
No. We quote OEM and aftermarket side by side with prices, and we say where each one holds up. You decide.
How much do you save on OEM parts?
At least 15% under dealer list. Free delivery on orders $200+ within 15 miles of our Fullerton warehouse, usually same day.
